Winter Fruits

By Stett Holbrook

JUST because it's cold outside doesn't mean you have to stop eating fruit. Try these five winter winners.

Asian Pears Sometimes called apple pears, Asian pears are crisp like an apple and have a great balance of sweetness and acidity.

Cherimoya This Andean fruit is best eaten as is or as a special addition to fruit salad. Approach it as you would an avocado. Skip the skin and seeds and spoon out the soft flesh.

Kiwi Once known as a Chinese gooseberry, kiwis are great in salads, desserts and smoothies.

Persimmons The most common kinds of persimmon are the fuyu and the hachiya. You eat a fuyu like an apple. Hachiyas need to ripen and are great in desserts.

Pomegranates Loaded with antioxidants, pomegranates have suddenly become trendy. Try a salad with pomegranate seeds, arugula, candied pecans and a balsamic vinaigrette.
